As India defender Anwar Ali’s football future remains uncertain, a fresh twist in what is already being called Indian football’s biggest drama has emerged. Anwar Ali’s controversial move from Mohun Bagan to arch-rivals East Bengal FC has ignited tensions, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) initially imposing a significant ban and fine on the player. However, the Delhi High Court has added a new layer of intrigue by overturning the AIFF’s ruling, further intensifying the situation.
Now, Anwar Ali awaits a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Players Status Committee, as well as a response from Mohun Bagan. With the Kolkata Derby just around the corner in the Indian Super League (ISL), the stakes are higher than ever.
On September 10, the AIFF imposed a four-month suspension on Anwar Ali, finding him “guilty” of terminating his four-year contract with Mohun Bagan in an unjust manner. However, the Delhi High Court recently overturned this verdict, ordering the AIFF to withdraw the decision till the fresh verdict. This ruling has amplified interest in the player’s future, as it also nullified the Rs 12.90 crore compensation previously demanded from Anwar.
Justice Sanjeev Narula, presiding over the case, directed the AIFF to reconsider its stance, with a detailed order expected soon. This legal battle has unsettled both the Mohun Bagan management and fanbase.
The Delhi High Court hearing introduced critical questions about the AIFF’s decision-making process, specifically criticizing the lack of detailed reasoning behind Anwar Ali’s suspension and the hefty compensation imposed. The court emphasized that the principles of natural justice were not followed, particularly in providing the player and all involved parties a fair opportunity to be heard. The AIFF’s Player Status Committee was directed to reconsider the case in light of this, with fresh hearings expected to take place soon.
The most significant development is whether or not Anwar Ali will be granted the No Objection Certificate (NOC) that would allow him to officially represent East Bengal. The NOC is a key requirement, as it will enable Anwar to bypass the AIFF’s earlier suspension ruling and register for the ISL side.
East Bengal and Mohun Bagan face off in the ISL on October 19, with the fixture gaining extra hype after their Durand Cup clash was called off. If Anwar receives this certificate in time, he will be eligible to play in the upcoming Kolkata Derby, a clash that carries immense weight given the historic rivalry between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
However, if the decision is delayed or if any new legal complications arise, Anwar’s availability could be jeopardized, potentially ruling him out of one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season. For now, all eyes are on the AIFF’s next steps and the court’s final verdict on the matter.
East Bengal have tasted defeat in their ISL opener against Bengaluru FC, and their setup is in need of a solid defensive presence. Anwar, known for his defensive prowess, would be a crucial addition, making his availability all the more important. His presence could provide a much-needed boost, especially in holding midfield—a position where East Bengal has struggled recently.
